Updated October 22, 2026 · General information from Kitchen Cabinet Cost

The door is what everyone sees, and it is one of the easiest places for a cabinet price to climb. Style, construction, and finish all affect cost, and some choices also affect cleaning and durability.

Common door styles

Shaker

A flat recessed center panel inside a simple square frame. It suits many kitchen styles and is offered by nearly every manufacturer at every price level, which often keeps it competitively priced. The inside corners collect a little grime, so they need wiping.

Slab (flat panel)

A single flat piece, usually MDF, plywood with veneer, laminate, or thermofoil. Slab doors are common in modern kitchens. Laminate and melamine slabs are often among the least expensive options, while high-gloss lacquer or exotic veneer slabs can be expensive.

Raised panel

A center panel with a shaped, raised profile. Traditional in look and often more expensive in solid wood because of the extra machining. Detailed profiles collect dust.

Inset

Doors sit inside the face frame, flush with it, rather than overlapping. Inset requires precise construction and adjustment, so it is usually found in custom and higher-end semi-custom lines and costs noticeably more. Seasonal wood movement can make tight inset doors rub in humid months.

Glass-front

Frame doors with glass inserts are usually priced as an upcharge per door. Interior lighting and finished interiors add more.

Overlay types

Full-overlay doors cover nearly the whole face frame for a modern look; partial-overlay doors show more frame and are common in budget lines. Full overlay often costs a bit more and needs more careful installation so doors do not collide.

Wood species

Oak and maple are widely available and often among the more economical solid woods. Cherry, walnut, and quartersawn oak typically cost more. Paint-grade doors are often made from maple, poplar, or MDF. Cherry darkens noticeably with light exposure over time, which some people love and others do not expect.

Tips for choosing

  • Look at full-size doors in person under similar lighting to your kitchen.
  • Ask for the same door style quoted in paint and stain to see the upcharge.
  • Consider durability in high-use areas: a busy family kitchen may favor stain or a forgiving texture.
  • Drawer fronts in the same style as doors are the norm, but slab drawer fronts with Shaker doors can lower cost on some lines.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most affordable cabinet door style?

Simple slab doors in laminate or thermofoil and basic Shaker doors are often among the most economical, depending on the manufacturer.

Do painted cabinets cost more than stained?

Often, yes. Many manufacturers add a paint upcharge, and painting involves extra steps. Policies vary by brand.

Are inset cabinets worth the extra cost?

It is a style choice. Inset has a classic, furniture-like look but usually costs more and needs precise installation and occasional adjustment.

Does door style affect resale?

Neutral, widely popular styles may appeal to more buyers, but there is no guaranteed return on any finish choice.
